History of Wiggins Telephone Association

Wiggins Telephone Association was formed and incorporated in 1951 when Mountain Bell would only agree to serve the town of Wiggins and not the rural areas.  Records show that in 1952, at the first Annual Meeting, we had approximately 301 subscribers in an area that covered approximately 300 square miles.

The New Raymer, Hoyt-Shamrock, and Briggsdale areas were added to the system in 1960.  The Association then had 673 miles of line and served 808 customers.  In 1976 the Wiggins and Hoyt exchanges were upgraded to single party, buried cable service, with Briggsdale and New Raymer being upgraded in 1977.

Purchase of the Grover exchange was completed in 1976.  The Association recognized that the equipment and service in the Grover exchange was below that in our other exchanges.  In 1979 the Grover area was upgraded to single party, buried cable service.

Northern Colorado Communication Inc. (NCCI), a subsidiary of Wiggins Telephone Association, was created in 1992.  NCCI offers, cable TV to the town of Wiggins, long distance service, voice mail, conference calling, a variety of telephones, and WildBlue Satellite Internet.

In October of 1993 the purchase of the South Carpenter and South Pine Bluffs exchange from U.S. West was completed.  By the end of March of 1994 all customers were upgraded to single party buried cable service.

In October of 1999 the Hoyt and Wiggins Exchanges were consolidated. This consolidation resulted in the prefix for the Hoyt customers being changed from 432 to 483. The last digits remained the same. This broadened the Hoyt customers’ calling area, adding Roggen and Weldona to their free calling area.  Also in 1999, the Wiggins Telephone Association completed the necessary upgrades to become Year 2000 Compliant.

The year 2001 was an important milestone in the history of our organization.  September marked the completion of 50 years of service to rural Colorado.  On June 23rd, the company hosted a BBQ, followed by carnival games and bingo.  The highlight of the evening was the dedication of the flagpole in honor/memory of those who worked so hard to make the Association successful.  Around 300 people attended this fun filled evening.

For the past few years, we have worked to keep up with the growth in our areas.

This year (2006) we are doing a study to determine what areas to upgrade and what new services we can offer our customers.
